Computing

Intent

At Widney, we recognise that pupils are entitled to a broad and balanced computing education with a structured, progressive approach to learning how computer systems work, the use of IT and the skills necessary to become digitally literate and participate fully in the modern world. It is an aspect of education that motivates and inspires and our intent is to encourage a love of learning through a wide variety of technologies.

We believe that every child should have the right to a curriculum that champions excellence; supporting pupils in achieving to the very best of their abilities. We understand the immense value technology plays not only in supporting the Computing and whole school curriculum but overall in the day-to-day life of our school. We believe that technology can provide: enhanced collaborative learning opportunities; better engagement of pupils; easier access to rich content; support conceptual understanding of new concepts and can support the needs of all our pupils. The purpose of this policy is to state how the school intends to make this provision.

Our aims:

  • Provide an exciting, rich, relevant and challenging Computing curriculum for all pupils.
  • Teach pupils to become responsible, respectful and competent users of data, information and communication technology.
  • Provide technology solutions for forging better home and school links.
  • Enthuse and equip pupils with the capability to use technology throughout their lives.
  • Teach pupils to understand the importance of governance and legislation regarding how information is used, stored, created, retrieved, shared and manipulated.
  • Utilise computational thinking beyond the Computing curriculum.
  • Give pupils access to a variety of high quality hardware, software and unplugged resources.
  • Equip pupils with skills, strategies and knowledge that will enable them to reap the benefits of the online world, whilst being able to minimise risk to themselves or others.
  • Exceed the minimum government recommended/statutory guidance for programmes of study for Computing and other related legislative guidance (online safety).

Information regarding school systems

At Widney Junior, we use Solihull Authority’s filtering and virus protection systems.

The main online sites we ask children to use in and outside of school are Purple Mash, Century, Spelling Shed, Times Table Rockstars, Junior Librarian and Class Dojo. In class, pupils may be asked to research specific topics. The web address may be provided to the children or they will be asked to use a safe search web address. There may be times when children are asked to upload school work to the portfolio section on Class Dojo.
